patterns in taekwondo





Korean = Poomse



In WTF Style Taekwondo there are 8 patterns that students should learn as they progress through the grades towards black belt. These are known as the Taegeuk patterns and each pattern requires more skill as you move towards black belt.


There are 9 black belt patterns that follow the Taegeuk patterns. These patterns are usually required for Dan gradings.

1. taegeuk il jang



18 moves





This is the first Taegeuk Pattern and represents Heaven and Light. This pattern uses short stance, long stance, front kick and basic blocks and punches.



2. taegeuk ee jang



18 Moves





The second pattern that represents joyfulness or sometimes river. This pattern introduces more long stances, high section punches and uses more kicks.



3. taegeuk sam jang



18 moves





Sam Jang is the third pattern and represents fire and sun. This pattern uses back stances and some knife hand techniques not present in the previous patterns.



4. taegeuk sa jang



20 moves





This pattern represents thunder and is the fourth Taegeuk pattern. More knife hand techniques are used and side kicks are also included in the pattern.



5. taegeuk oh jang



20 moves





The fifth Taegeuk pattern represents wind. This patterns uses some elbow techniques and introduces x stance in addition to more basic kicks and strikes.​



6. taegeuk yuk jang



19 Moves





Yuk Jang represents water and is the only Taegeuk pattern that does not have a kiyap (shout) on the last move as it is earlier on in the pattern. Turning kick is also used in this form.



7. taegeuk chil jang



25 moves





The seventh Taegeuk pattern represents mountain. This pattern uses a range of techniques as well as introducing scissor block, tiger stance and crescent kick. A number of new techniques are introduced in this pattern.



8. taegeuk pal jang



27 moves





Pal Jang is the final Taegeuk pattern and represents Earth. This pattern uses two Kiyaps (shouts) and introduces a range of new techniques including mountain block and jumping front kick.
